Alpe Adria Radweg from Villach to Grado
Day 1 - Arrival in VillachThe historic character of the town with its beautiful churches, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque facades around the central square and the atmospheric courtyards beyond is well preserved. Villach has a thermal spa.Day 2 - From Villach to Tarvisio 39 kmAlong the Gail, on the southern side of the Villach Alps, you pass the Dobratsch Nature Park. Towards the border triangle, the Julian Alps (Slovenia) rise high. After some idyllic villages and a slight climb, you cross the border with Italy at Thörn-Maglern. You are now in Friulia: a blended border region between Roman, Germanic and Slovak cultures. A railway cycle path up the Slizza valley leads to the destination of Tarvisio in Val Canale. High above the town is the sanctuary of Madonna de Lussari, which can be reached via the pilgrim trail but also by cable car.Day 3 - From Tarvisio to Carnia 56 kmThrough the Val Canale, you follow the railway bike path slightly downhill past some military forts (WWI) to Pontebba, where the bridge marks the old border between Italy and the Habsburg Empire. You continue the bike trail through a series of short, lighted bike tunnels high above the river Fella, which you cross via an old railway bridge. In Moggio, the railway cycle path ends and you cycle the final kilometres to the village of Carnia. Here, the Fella flows into the Tagliamento, which you follow for several kilometres upstream to the historic alpine town of Tolmezzo.Day 4 - From Carnia to Udine 64 kmEarly in the day, you cycle through the walled medieval town of Venzone. The 'Tiere Motus' museum shows how the town was resurrected after the 1976 earthquake. A few kilometres further on, the mountains give way to fertile, gently undulating farmland. Over quiet streets, past numerous small villages, you reach the provincial capital Udine. Udine was a Venetian city for centuries but other cultures also made their presence felt here. Central on a hill in the historical centre is the castle (museum). The church next to it, Santa Maria di Castello has beautiful frescoes. A wonderful museum is the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.Day 5 - From Udine to Grado 61 kmFurther south, you reach the coastal plain. In the star-shaped fortified town of Palmanova (16th century), all streets lead to the central square where the cathedral stands. After Cervignano, you cycle past the extensive excavations of the Roman port of Aquileia and a 10th-century basilica with wonderful frescos and mosaic floors. Over a dam in the lagoon, you reach the historic fishing town of Grado, one of the most popular seaside resorts on the Adriatic.Day 6 - Rest day along the coastOn this day, you can choose from several options: a day of lazing on Grado's lovely sandy beach, a boat trip to the pilgrimage church on the Isola di Barbana.Day 7 - Departure, extension or transfer to VillachShould you wish to return to Villach, you can use a bus transfer on Friday and Saturday (optional). The bike can of course come along.
