Alpe Adria Radweg from Salzburg to Villach - 6 days
Day 1 - Arrival in SalzburgUpon arrival, you can visit the beautiful Altstadt with its cathedral, Mozart's birthplace or the imposing Hohensalzburg fortress. Romantic streets and squares invite you to stroll around. Make a stop to enjoy a genuine Austrian coffee speciality. A wide range of museums and performances fulfils your cultural desires.Day 2 - From Salzburg to St. Johann im Pongau 60 kmOn the bike promenade along the Salzach, you leave Salzburg. The river is your companion today. The old Celtic town of Hallein surprises you with beautiful facades. Salt mining brought wealth here as early as 2,500 years ago. The main attraction is the world-famous Celtic museum. After Golling (waterfall, castle) you cycle over the Lueg Pass, but you can also take the train. Along the Salzach, you continue cycling to Werfen with its magisterial castle. By bus and cable car, you can take a trip to the Eisriesenwelt, the largest ice cave in the world. Through the widened valley, you cycle quite easily to Bischofshofen, where the annual final of the Four Hills Tournament takes place. Soon after, you reach St Johann, where the towers of the Pongau Dom rise into the sky like mountain peaks.Day 3 - From St.Johann im Pongau to Mallnitz 55 kmJust outside St Johann, you have the opportunity to visit the Liechtensteinklamm, one of the longest and deepest gorges in the Alps. Beyond Schwarzach, you leave the Salzach and begin a tough route along panoramic streets past farms, fruit trees and alpine meadows. You now follow the Gasteiner Ache through its wild valley and, to do so, also pass a 1.5 km long tunnel (lit and with separate cycle path). You can avoid this tunnel and the preceding climb by taking the train from Schwarzach for a bit. Via Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein, you cycle to the famous spa and winter sports town of Bad Gastein at the foot of the Hohe Tauern mountains. In the middle of the mountain town, the Gasteiner Ache forms a formidable waterfall. A stone's throw away is Böckstein, where a shuttle train from the Tauernschleuse takes you to Mallnitz on the southern side of the Alps in 10 minutes. The small village is in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park and attracts many hikers and cyclists.Day 4 - From Mallnitz to Sachsenburg/Spittal approx. 30 - 40 kmBetween impressive high mountain landscapes, you follow the Möll downstream. With a romantic mountain railway (Kreuzeck Panorambahn) you can also view the scene from higher altitude. At Möllbrücke you reach the Drau Valley and thus the sunny south of Austria. You stay overnight in Mühldorf or the market town of Sachsenburg.Day 5 - From Sachsenburg/Spittal to Villach approx. 40 - 55 kmIn the wide valley of the River Drau, you pass the excavations of the Roman city of Teurnia. Spittal a.d. Drau was already an important stopping place for pilgrims and travellers in the Middle Ages. You can visit the Renaissance castle Porcia in the city park. For a phenomenal panorama of the city and the surrounding alpine chains, take the Seilbahn to the top of the Goldeck. After this, continue downstream, either by train or by bike close to the beautifully emerald green waters that are pushed wide here and there. The Carantana museum in Sankt Peter displays a treasure trove of finds from a Carolingian monastery. Your cycling tour ends in the spa town of Villach, a small, old town with southern charm. Stroll along the Drau promenade and the town square decorated with Baroque facades. Total relaxation can be found in the town's thermal baths.Day 6 - Departure or extension or transfer to SalzburgIf you want to return to Salzburg, you can use a train transfer for which you need to make a reservation. Your bike can come along, of course. If you stay an extra day, you can take a tour along several lakes and the castle ruins of Landskron.
